It was the pie.

If you’ve read this blog before you might have seen this post from last April about how I, through following advice in a book called “The State of Slim” lost 15 pounds and continued to keep it off. I paid attention to what I ate, made sure I got enough water and protein, and most importantly, kept exercising 6 days per week. I really got into it, it was a habit that simply was my life.  It was actually everything that we at the 14th Street Y strive to provide for our members, a place where you want to come so that your fitness goals simply become your new reality.

Last year at this time, I just finished the recommended program and was in maintenance. I leaped into January feeling pretty great.  I was so excited about the program that I started a class here at the Y, The STATE OF SLIM, every Monday night at 6:30PM. We had about 15 regular members come to try the program, discuss the challenges and victories, and really experience living healthfully. The class was so great it has continued under the leadership of Elizabeth Schneider, one of our great fitness instructors, along with member Suellen, who not only got healthy and fit by following the advice in the book, she became the person to ask about it.

I continued my life fairly healthfully, even revisiting the plan in September when I got on the scale and realized the scale and crept up 5 pounds, and it was my trigger weight to recommit to the amount of exercise, eating portioned food 6 times a day (so you don’t feel hungry) with a good lean protein with every meal. By November I was back where I wanted to be.

Then came December. Specifically, the last 10 days. I visited my parents in the mid-west and it was really, really cold, like stay indoors and don’t walk anywhere cold. Don’t even leave the house to go to the car. And while you’re there, have some more pie. Which I did.

So now, though I have not stepped on the scale, I know. I KNOW!  It takes so little time to break good habits. Luckily, it can also take little time to build them up again.  So today, I’m eating for health and energy.  Today I am visiting our 14th Street Y gym. Today!

Living in the State of Slim

“Camille? You know,  every woman needs an amazing pair of jeans.  Let me pull one for you.”

Over the December Holiday break I was in my home town shopping with a dear high school friend.  She took me to a clothing store where they ask you your name, what you’re looking for, quickly analyze your body type with a flutter of their eyes and immediately hunt down a few perfect outfits. (The store also gives your kids animal cookies and counts huge bathrooms as part of their real estate, and no this store does not exist in NYC).

They brought me a pair of jeggings.  I laughed at them.  More on that later.

6 months earlier than this,  I had been  puzzled by the fit of my clothes.  They felt weird.  Not tight, the way I normally experienced weight gain, but weird.  So I decided to pay a visit to the scale, which I had avoided for a complete year.

I found that in the time of my scale avoidance I had slowly put on 10 pounds.  And I wasn’t exactly at my ideal weight the last time I visited the scale, which is why I probably declined to visit it for a full year. My first step, after crying a little, was to recommit to healthy habits like working out at least 4 times a week, and track what I ate.  At first it worked.  In the first 6 weeks I lost about 5 pounds, which was great.

But then I hit a plateu.  A big one.  I didn’t lose any weight for 8 weeks, despite the exercising and the tracking.  It was getting exhausting too.  Not the exercising so much…I actually was enjoying that part.  But I was so tired of paying so much attention to what I ate.  I would much prefer to live my life rather than obsess about food, and it was starting to drive me crazy.

Can you relate?  If so, you might want to think about joining us at the Y on Monday nights, 6:30PM to learn about the State of Slim.  Because just as I was ready to throw in the towel and disappear into a box of cookies I learned about this new book and program, The State of Slim, or “The Colorado Diet”.  It whispered a phrase I feel like I’ve been waiting my entire lifetime to hear…”You can fix your inflexible metabolism”.   Before I learned exactly what I would need to do to fix the inflexible metabolism that I’d struggled with my entire life (first diet at the age of 8, anyone?) I read about the science behind the State of Slim, the inspirational way to build great habits, the connection between MY LIFE’S PURPOSE and my healthiest, happiest self.  That’s pretty heady stuff for a diet book.

Which is to say of course, that it’s truly not a diet. It is a plan for restructuring the way I approach and think about  my life.   I have lost a total of 15 pounds since that first weigh in, and have maintained that loss for 4 months, with very little struggle.  I have learned to eat, exercise and be active in ways  that I enjoy, that add to the quality of my life, that help me set a positive example for my children, and that help me fulfill my life’s purpose.

Again.  Pretty heady stuff for a diet book.

-Elliptical: Intervals 10-15 minutes;

1.5 min work phase (heart rate up to 176) / 2 min recovery phase (heart rate at 151-164)

-12 Side Lunge to Balance on BOSU (Right)/Lateral Crawl 5 paces out /6 Plank Rotations/Lateral Crawl 5 paces back

Repeat Circuit on the left, beginning with side Lunges to Balance on BOSU

Strength:

20-24 Squat to alternating press and rotation

12-15 Assisted Pull-ups (using the machine in the fitness center)

12-15 Standing Cable Press

15-20 Sumo Squat Deadlift

 

Core:

30 total Plank with hand taps on step:  (Start in a plank. Keeping your body rigid (hips and shoulders level) reach to your side as far as possible with your left hand while balancing on your right elbow and feet. Bring your left arm back in to the plank position. Repeat with the right hand and continue. To make this easier, position your feet further apart.)

15 Swiss Ball Straight Leg Bridge to Glute Bridge

30 total Ball Twist
